Spotify’s Latest Features: AI Playlists & Music Videos You Need to Try

If you still think of Spotify as just a music player, it’s time to take another look. Recently, Spotify has rolled out a series of eye-catching new features, from AI-powered smart playlists to built-in music videos. These updates are quietly changing how we experience music. Whether you’re a free user or a Premium subscriber, these Spotify features are worth trying out. Here are three of the most useful ones you shouldn’t miss.

AI Playlist: Generate a Custom Playlist with a Single Sentence

This is the most talked-about new feature. Simply type a description into the search bar—like “jazz for a rainy day” or “high-energy electronic for running”—and Spotify’s AI will automatically generate a playlist that matches the vibe. In our tests, the AI playlist hit the mark surprisingly well, even grasping more abstract emotional keywords.

Using it is easy. Open the Spotify app on your phone, tap the “Your Library” tab, and you’ll find the “AI Playlist” entry. For now, this feature is mainly available to users in English-speaking markets. You can access it by using a VPN to switch to a US or UK node, though Chinese-language prompts are still a work in progress. Some users report that a few tracks in the generated list may feel off-topic, but overall, the usability far exceeds expectations.

Built-in Music Videos: Watch While You Listen

Beyond AI playlists, the introduction of music videos is another significant update. When playing certain popular tracks, you’ll see a “Switch to Video” button on the “Now Playing” screen. Tap it, and the song will switch to its official music video—all without leaving the Spotify app. No more hopping over to YouTube to watch the full MV.

This feature is now available in over 97 markets, covering a wide range of pop, rock, and electronic tracks. However, not every song supports video mode—some users may find only a few tracks in their playlists can be switched. According to Spotify, the company is accelerating copyright negotiations, and the library of video-supported songs will gradually expand. This feature makes it hard to stop “browsing” songs.

Free Users’ Upgrade: Search & Play Specific Songs

In the past, free Spotify users could only shuffle songs within playlists and couldn’t pick a specific track on demand. That limitation is now gone. Free-tier users now have the “Search & Play” feature, allowing you to actively search for and play any single song from Spotify’s massive catalog, just like paid users. You’ll still hear ads, but the freedom is a major step up.

This change is a game-changer for many listeners. You no longer need to pay for a subscription just to play one song. Simply search for the track name on your computer or phone and hit play. Combined with the “Share & Play” feature, you can even listen with friends. The only drawbacks are the occasional ad breaks in free mode and some high-quality audio options being locked, but for most casual users, it’s more than enough.
