Spotify has rolled out a series of significant updates, with the most attention-grabbing being that free users can now search for and play specific songs at will. In the past, the free tier only allowed shuffle play. Now, simply enter a song name or artist, and you can directly play the music you want—boosting the listening experience dramatically.
Free Users Get On-Demand Playback
Spotify has named these new features "Pick and Play," "Search and Play," and "Share and Play," all designed to give free users more active control. Previously, free users could only skip six tracks per hour. Now, you can type in a track title and play it instantly, or tap a song shared by a friend to start listening right away. However, according to a report from TechCrunch, free users have a fixed daily on-demand time allowance. Once that limit is used up, playback reverts to shuffle mode—a clear boundary set for the free experience.
Premium Users Continue to Get Exclusive Upgrades
While catering to free users, Spotify hasn't left paying subscribers behind. Premium users have recently gained access to lossless audio quality, along with exclusive tools like AI playlists and Mix features. If you're a serious music lover who wants unrestricted on-demand playback, upgrading to Premium is still the smoother choice. The free tier has loosened up on-demand control, but after the daily limit is reached, the experience remains noticeably different from the paid version.
